Jaffna Recreation & Visitor Centre
The Visitor Facility and Recreation Centre at Thinnai Organic Farm reimagines rural tourism in the Jaffna Peninsula by creating an immersive destination that celebrates agriculture, culture, and nature. Designed around the region’s vernacular architectural language, the project reconnects visitors with the lifestyle of local farmers while promoting the value of organic farming and sustainable living. Set within a 41,465 m² organic farm, only 6% of the site is developed, allowing the landscape and agricultural production to remain dominant. Built using locally sourced brick, thatch, Calicut roofing, and recycled stone gabions, the architecture reflects regional craftsmanship and environmentally responsive construction. Spaces seamlessly merge with nature to accommodate farming experiences, wellness activities, cultural events, workshops, and community celebrations. By integrating vernacular design, local materials, passive environmental strategies, solar energy, rainwater management, and greywater reuse, the project regenerates Jaffna’s architectural identity while creating an eco-positive destination that strengthens rural livelihoods, cultural heritage, and sustainable tourism.
