During their North American careers, the partners of DPA contributed to a wide range of urban design, planning and heritage projects in Ontario, Canada working with the City of Toronto and the Town of Clarington as Senior Urban Designers and Planners. These commissions shaped town centres, revitalised heritage main streets, and guided major private developments.
Bowmanville Downtown Urban Revitalisation & Heritage Conservation
A community improvement program for the historic core of Bowmanville, combining heritage building conservation with infill development, façade renewal and public-realm enhancement. The work followed a devastating 2008 fire in a designated heritage block, and guided its sensitive reconstruction within the established main-street fabric.
Clarington Façade Improvement Program
Part of the Community Improvement Plan, this program paired property owners along the main streets of Bowmanville and Orono with design guidance to renew their shopfronts. Each commission produced a before-and-after visualisation new signage, awnings, colour and detailing that collectively lifted the character and vitality of the town’s heritage commercial frontages.
Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Convention Centre, Clarington
Urban design and built-form review of a new hotel and convention centre for Clarington, balancing a prominent gateway presence with a scale and materiality appropriate to the surrounding context.
Port of Newcastle Waterfront Development
Urban design guidance for a waterfront community at Port Hope / Newcastle preparing development guidelines and policy documentation, reviewing development proposals, and shaping the public realm around a landmark community building on the harbour.
Honda Showroom, Clarington Urban Design Review
Architectural design and built-form review of a new automotive showroom, including optional design concepts, site planning and the approvals process, with attention to its presence along a key arterial corridor.
West Town Centre Streetscape Implementation
Urban visioning and streetscape implementation for the Brookhill Neighbourhood of Clarington’s West Town Centre leading the public consultation process, coordinating across city departments, and delivering concept building, detailed planning and implementation strategies.
Clarington’s Street of Remembrance Veterans’ Memorial
A concept design for a section of King Street developed as a “Street of Remembrance” with rows of maple trees, decorative lighting and planted medians framing a sculptural war memorial. The monument, composed of granite pillars in three colours set in three rows, honours all Clarington men and women who have served the nation across land, sea and air.
Young & Eglinton Centre Development, Toronto
Urban design review of a major mixed-use development at Yonge & Eglinton, working as the individual design advisor conducting built-form studies, site planning and land-use planning, and guiding the proposal through public and private agency consultation toward approval.
