University of Sri Jayawardenepura Streetscape

Liberating Spaces for Creating Places is an urban design intervention that transforms the 1.2 km frontage of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura along Soratha Mawatha into a vibrant public realm. Rooted in the belief that cities are defined by the quality of their shared spaces, the project reclaims underutilized land by relocating the university boundary wall 4–7 metres inward, creating generous pedestrian zones and active public spaces. Two entrance plazas function as informal learning environments and civic gathering places, encouraging interaction between the university and the wider community through seating, exhibitions, performances, and shaded social spaces. The design enhances walkability, accessibility, and urban identity while strengthening the relationship between the institution and the city. By transforming a formerly exclusive edge into an inclusive urban interface, the project demonstrates how strategic public space interventions can foster social engagement, reinforce institutional identity, and create a more people-oriented and livable urban environment.
