Urban Design & Master Plan Mannar Town

5 photographs

Urban Design Visioning for Mannar Town establishes a strategic framework to regenerate the discontinued urban traditions and coastal identity of one of Sri Lanka’s most historically significant towns. Developed through site observations, community consultations, surveys, and precedent studies, the vision seeks to transform Mannar into a vibrant, memorable, and people-oriented coastal city that celebrates its cultural heritage while embracing sustainable urban growth. The proposal strengthens the city’s image through the revitalization of key landmarks, gateways, heritage precincts, and mixed-use activity nodes, including the bazaar, fishing harbour, and fort area. Central to the vision is the integration of the built environment with Mannar’s distinctive natural assets its coastline, wetlands, bird sanctuary, and vegetation systems while improving connectivity, walkability, and public spaces. By reinforcing urban continuity, ecological resilience, and community life, the master plan promotes an inclusive and context-responsive urban environment that enhances social vitality, economic opportunities, and the unique identity of Mannar for future generations.
